The School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems has one of the oldest programs in the Faculty of Engineering dating back to 1957. The Bachelor of Engineering in Surveying & SIS program can also be combined with BSc, BCom or BA programs. The School is proud of its record of achievement - its graduates are leaders in industry, government and academic circles. The School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems offers a range of scholarships sponsored by industry, private donors and the Faculty. We have strong links with industry and all students complete an industrial training period. Our graduates are sought after by employers in Australia and overseas. Many are offered jobs even before graduating.

Selection Criteria for Bachelor of Engineering in Surveying & Spatial Information Systems

• UAI of 85…..or alternatively…
• Additional selection criteria: Students who achieve a UAI between 75.00 and 84.95 (and have not undertaken post-secondary studies) will be considered for admission under the Faculty of Engineering Admission Scheme (FEAS)*, which will include the UAI and a review of performance in relevant HSC (or equivalent) subjects. Students who anticipate achieving a UAI between 75.00 and 84.95 can maximise their opportunities for admission by submitting a FEAS application directly to the Faculty for an interview.

Interviews will be held in late September 2007 at UNSW in Sydney.

Major studies during your degree program: Cadastral surveying, precise satellite surveying and navigation, spatial information systems, computing and information technology, engineering surveying, management of land development.

Career opportunities: Examples include cadastral or engineering surveying, mapping, geodesy, GPS positioning and navigation, hydrography, land and geographic information systems, land development, land management, remote sensing and photogrammetry. Some graduates choose to work largely outdoors while others make heavy use of advanced software tools and emerging technologies. Surveyors and spatial information specialists may have their own consultancies or work as members of a multidisciplinary team both in the field and in an office, within private industry or government. There is a strong demand for graduates to work overseas.

The discipline of surveying and spatial information systems are involved with the measurement, management, presentation and analysis of spatially related data. They are concerned with any data that can be given a position tag, from land parcels to engineering projects to medical images. They also use computer graphics and information systems and apply measurements and knowledge of law in the legal definition of boundaries and the sustainable development and management of land. There is currently a global shortage of survey/spatial information graduates, resulting in excellent career opportunities.

The program is accredited by both the Institution of Surveyors (NSW) and Engineers Australia. The program is also recognised by the Board of Surveying and Spatial Information as a suitable program that leads to the qualification of Registered Surveyor.

Surveying and SIS can be combined with Arts, Computer Science or Science or with Commerce.
